C-7 Whose Standards and Norms? Whose Inclusion?

Clear and well-articulated community norms and standards play key roles in the formation of school culture. In today’s internationalized and diverse campuses, though, it has become more challenging to establish truly inclusive norms. Who defines these norms, and from whose perspectives? And do these norms require international students to dismiss or even violate their own cultural upbringings? This workshop unpacks and re-evaluates the common message to international students that “you are coming to the U.S., so of course you are going to adapt to American values,” and considers possible ways to approach the dilemma of building an inclusive and diverse community while holding shared community norms and standards.
