VA-3 Race — a Discussion of Class and Caste

Race is seen as a binary issue: either you are Black or you are White. This idea however, neglects to consider the complexity of the issue which involves ethnicity, identity, prejudices, origins, power, class, and the caste system. This workshop proposes a distinctive perspective on discussion around race and racism. It addresses the dangers of confining communities in a binary tandem, which raises culpabilities linked to racial identities while validating the rise of white supremacy. The workshop offers ways to open the discussion with students and colleagues, while drawing different groups in the conversation through their own experiences. Finally, it provides a space where Equity and Justice embrace each individual.
