VA-6 One Step from Disaster: Business Leaders and Heads — Do You Know How Vulnerable You Are to Cyber Attack?

Cyber attacks against independent schools are so prevalent now as to be essentially unavoidable. We like to believe that our networks, financial resources, and people are safe behind technological barriers, despite routine reports in the media that organizations equally and more sophisticated than us are being hacked. Our IT teams struggle mightily to stave-off threats, but often it’s not enough. Ransomware cripples schools for weeks. Financial thieves syphon huge sums from operating and endowment funds. Cyber stalkers inflict unimaginable harm to students and their families. These criminals are so sophisticated that they readily circumvent normal safeguards. Schools need to step up their game, big time! The solution to avoiding being a victim is an organizational response, with involvement from the Board, Head of School, Deans, business leaders, IT and operational teams, department heads, faculty, students, and parents. This presentation will speak to both school business and IT leaders, identifying the most significant cybersecurity threats schools face, and the tangible steps to mitigate them.
