VC-4 Listening While White

How does growing up White impact how we listen to people of color? Many White people do not identify as “White,” and may be unaware of the ways in which Whiteness can shape how we listen to students and faculty of color. We will explore in an informal, nonjudgmental manner how “whiteness” fits into personal identity and the kinds of anxieties and opportunities that listening presents for White faculty. And, we will explore some focused listening skills. This is open to all participants but the focus will be on Whiteness. I will present some personal and didactic material followed by focused questions for discussion first in break- out groups, then and in the group as a whole.
