DD-3 Creating Cultural Equity on your Campus: Uncovering your School’s Hidden History to Build a Restorative Future
The history of boarding schools is textured with legacies to celebrate as well as challenging narratives of exclusion. How can we create environments and frameworks that allow for constructive conversations about race and the history of school culture and physical spaces? In this workshop, you’ll use primary historical sources, poetry, and legal techniques to examine socially charged narratives and learn to conduct deep conversations that allow for mistakes and learning. Then, you’ll explore examples of Cultural Equity Plans that engage the community to reflect upon your school’s past and present through the lenses of law, justice and equity. Finally, you’ll imagine a restorative future, one that is inclusive of all members of the community and mindful of context, non-erasure and process.
